Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to make something sweet for your boo! I wanted to make something special this year and thought these sweetheart strawberry danishes would be great! Danishes are one of my most favorite breakfast pastries to make & look so festive as well. That being said, these danishes are the perfect breakfast idea for your honey or even a fun at home activity to make with the kiddos to get into the Valentine’s Day spirit.

I made them with a heart shaped puff pastry, homemade custard & fresh strawberries. I did a test run this weekend & they were divine!!! Both Justin & I loved them! Check the recipe below to make these adorable Valentine’s Day breakfast treats!

 Custard Cream Ingredients:

1/4 cup sugar

2 Tbsp cornstarch

pinch of salt

2 egg yolks

1 cup of milk

1/4 vanilla extract

Heart Shape Danish Ingredients:

heart shaped cookie cutters

2 cups of fresh thinly sliced strawberries

1 box of frozen Pepperidge Farm puff pastry

egg wash

powdered sugar

Directions

Custard Cream Ingredients:

  1. Combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a mixer. Whisk together, then add egg yolks and mix until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Put milk in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer, stir the milk to prevent it from burning. After the milk begins to simmer, remove from the heat and pour about 1/3 of the hot milk to the egg/sugar mix, on a medium speed. Once well mixed, pour mixture back into saucepan with the rest of the milk.
  3. Return the sauce pan to the stove and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to boil and thicken to a pudding-like consistency. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Set aside and cover with a piece of wax paper.

Heart Shaped Danish Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375. Line two baking sheet pans with parchment paper. Spray with coconut oil to prevent them from sticking.
  2. Roll out puff pastry & use heart shaped cookie cutters to make individual sized danishes. I use the remaining puff pastry and made two large hearts using my hands to create the shapes or you can roll out the extra dough and continue to make more small heart shapes.
  3. Spread 1 tsp of the custard cream on the heart shaped puff pastry
  4. Top with thinly sliced strawberries.
  5. Brush edges with an egg wash.
  6. Place on baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until golden.
